Sunbrella vs Olefin vs Polyester: 3 Umbrella Canopy Fabrics
Sunbrella vs olefin is a brand against a fiber. Sunbrella says its performance fabrics are made of 100% solution dyed acrylic, and olefin and polyester are generic fiber names under the FTC's textile rules, each one a different polymer. So when you compare umbrella canopies, judge the fabric by its own product line and warranty, and treat the fiber name as the starting point.
Sunbrella draws that line in its own warranty. Its shade and marine fabrics carry a 10 year limited warranty, while its upholstery, specialty and decorative shade fabrics carry 5 years. The other guides we read compare these fabrics on cushions, so this one sticks to canopies. If you're already comparing frames, start with our patio umbrellas.
Is Sunbrella olefin?
No. Sunbrella describes its performance fabrics as 100% solution dyed acrylic, and acrylic and olefin are separate fibers under the FTC's generic fiber definitions.
By those definitions, acrylic is a fiber made of at least 85 percent acrylonitrile units by weight. Olefin is at least 85 percent ethylene, propylene or other olefin units. Polyester is built from a different polymer again, an ester of a substituted aromatic carboxylic acid.
Sunbrella's recycled line does list a recycled polyester next to its recycled acrylic, so the brand name alone doesn't tell you the fiber. Our Sunbrella patio umbrellas are a good place to start, and it's still worth reading the fabric line on the exact canopy you pick.
What does solution dyed acrylic mean for an umbrella canopy?
Solution dyed means the color goes in before the fiber is spun into yarn. Sunbrella says its fibers are saturated with color and UV stabilized pigments first, so the pigment runs all the way through the yarn.
For the shade fabrics it makes for umbrellas, Sunbrella lists them as fade and UV resistant and says they withstand years of exposure without fading. That's Sunbrella's claim for its own fabric and says nothing either way about another brand's acrylic, olefin or polyester canopy.
Sunbrella vs olefin vs polyester: how do they compare as canopy fabric?
Olefin and polyester are generic fiber names with no single brand behind them, so their columns stick to the FTC definitions and what to ask the fabric's brand.
| Sunbrella | Olefin | Polyester | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand or generic fiber name | Brand | Generic fiber name under the FTC rules | Generic fiber name under the FTC rules |
| Fiber | Performance fabrics: 100% solution dyed acrylic (at least 85% acrylonitrile units) | At least 85% ethylene, propylene or other olefin units | At least 85% an ester of a substituted aromatic carboxylic acid |
| Fabric warranty | 10 year limited for shade and marine fabrics; 5 years for decorative shade fabrics | No fiber wide warranty; ask the fabric's brand | No fiber wide warranty; ask the fabric's brand |
| What to ask before you buy | Which Sunbrella line the canopy uses | Who makes the fabric, whether it's solution dyed, and the warranty years | Who makes the fabric, whether it's solution dyed, and the warranty years |
If you're hunting for the best patio umbrella fabric, ask for three things in writing: the fiber, the dye method, and the warranty years for that canopy line, with residential and commercial terms where the brand splits them.
Rotates 360 degrees, with a solution dyed acrylic canopy listed as Sunbrella or equivalent marine grade and rated UPF 80.
How is Sunbrella shade fabric different from its cushion fabric?
Sunbrella engineers them for different jobs. Its awning and marine canvas is made for shade structures and marine covers, with what Sunbrella calls a very stiff, tight construction and a heavy finish. Sunbrella builds its furniture and upholstery fabrics for softness, comfort and flexibility in seating.
The Sunbrella warranty also sorts its fabrics by use. Shade and marine fabrics get a 10 year limited warranty, and upholstery, specialty and decorative shade fabrics get 5 years.
So when you read a Sunbrella umbrella fabric spec, look for whether it names a shade or marine fabric. Decorative shade fabric sits under the 5 year warranty.
What are the disadvantages of Sunbrella?
Sunbrella's own care guide for shade fabrics points to a few trade offs:
- After a cleaning with a bleach solution, the fabric has to be treated again for water and stain resistance.
- Sunbrella advises against using bleach if you're surrounded by a body of water or another environment that could be affected.
- Bleach and the age of the fabric may wear the sewing thread and other parts that aren't Sunbrella.
- The fabric should only air dry.
What fabric do Shadowspec canopies use?
Shadowspec is one example of a brand that puts its canopy fabric in writing. It specs solution dyed acrylics from Sunbrella or Recasens, rated UPF 80.
The Shadowspec fabric warranty is 10 years residential and 3 years commercial. The Retreat has its own terms: 3 years residential and 1 year commercial. Product registration is mandatory to activate coverage, and using the Shadowspec Protection Cover is required to stay compliant with the warranty terms.
Some of our listings name the fabric brand. On the Unity Duo it's Sunbrella Marine or Recasens solution dyed acrylic, and the Serenity's spec reads solution dyed acrylic, Sunbrella or an equivalent marine grade fabric.
