A heater that is too small leaves guests reaching for a jacket, and one that is too big for its circuit trips a breaker on the first cold night. What decides it is how the space is built: a roof or pergola takes a mounted electric unit, an open deck takes a freestanding flame heater, and a covered bar with no gas line takes electric infrared over a table. We carry Bromic Heating and RadTec, so the lineup covers each of those jobs.

Electric patio heaters for covered spaces
Electric infrared heaters warm people and surfaces rather than the air, so they work under a roof or pergola where a flame heater cannot go. The larger units run on a 220-volt circuit and the compact ones on 110 volts, which is the first thing to check before you order. Zero-light models give off warmth without the orange glow, which matters over a dining table. Browse all electric outdoor heaters, then narrow the list to wall or ceiling units by where you have a mounting point.
Gas patio heaters for open decks
Propane flame heaters in the 40,000 BTU range put out the most heat per unit and need no wiring, so they suit an open deck, a pool surround, or an event lawn that changes layout. Natural gas versions drop the tank swaps once a line is run. Because they burn fuel they need open air above them, so treat every gas outdoor heater as an uncovered-space product.
Infrared patio heaters on poles and stands
If there is no wall or ceiling to mount to, a freestanding or portable heater puts the same infrared element on a pole or a wheeled stand. They move with the furniture for a private event and roll into storage for the summer. Weighted bases keep the tall ones planted on a windy deck.
Frequently asked questions about outdoor heating
How much does it cost to run a patio heater?
Electric heaters cost roughly what any resistive appliance of the same wattage does, and only draw power while they are on, so a per-zone switch or a timer keeps the bill down. Propane heaters cost a tank at a time, which is easy to track, and natural gas is the cheapest to run once the line is in.
Can I install an electric patio heater myself?
The mounting is a bracket job with the included hardware. The circuit is the part that usually needs an electrician, especially for the 220-volt units, and hardwiring is required on most mounted models. Portable 110-volt units plug into a standard outdoor outlet.
Are gas heaters safe under a patio cover?
No. Flame heaters need open air above them and clearance on all sides, so they belong on an uncovered deck or lawn. Under any roof, pergola, or awning, use an electric infrared heater rated for that clearance.
How many heaters does a patio need?
Count the seating zones rather than the square footage. Each mounted infrared heater covers the table or lounge group directly under it, so a long dining terrace typically needs one per two tables. A freestanding flame heater covers the circle of seats around it.
Do outdoor heaters work in wind?
Mounted electric infrared heaters do, because the heat travels as radiation and is not carried off by the breeze. Freestanding flame heaters lose more of their output in wind and can blow out, which is why a weighted base and a sheltered position matter for them.
