Cantilever Umbrellas

Cantilever umbrellas, also called offset umbrellas, hang the canopy from an arm on a pole set off to the side, so nothing stands in the middle of your seating. You can shade a whole lounge set or a dining table from one spot, and on models that rotate, turn the canopy to follow the sun across the deck.

About this collection

Shade the whole seating area with a cantilever patio umbrella

A cantilever umbrella keeps the pole at the edge and the shade over the chairs. Some models tilt or rotate on the arm, like the Shadowspec Serenity, to follow the afternoon sun, and others stay where you set them. They suit pool decks and patios where a center pole gets in the way. And at a rental or small hotel, one umbrella covers a whole group of guests.

Cantilever umbrella for a pool deck

The pole stays back on the deck while the canopy reaches over the loungers. Near a pool, check the frame for rust. Shadowspec uses anodized aluminum with 316 stainless steel hardware, and the Ledge Lounger Ultra has a marine grade aluminum pole.

Large cantilever umbrella sizes

Single canopy models like the Shadowspec Serenity come in 8 and 10 ft squares and 11 and 13 ft octagons. Squares line up with a table or a row of loungers, and octagons suit a round seating group. Our cantilever sizing chart matches canopy size to your space.

Heavy duty cantilever umbrella frames

A big offset canopy catches wind like a sail, so check the frame first. The FiberBuilt 10 ft square pairs a contract grade aluminum frame with a double vented canopy, and Ledge Lounger includes a wind stabilizer kit with the Ultra. Read what matters for a cantilever in wind.

Offset umbrella mounting: base, deck or wall

The anchor decides where it goes. Shadowspec offers a freestanding base with optional wheels, a surface plate for concrete or decks, an in ground anchor for new builds and windy spots, and a wall bracket. With no room on the ground, wall mounted umbrellas like the Shadowspec Retreat mount to the house and turn 45 degrees.

Frequently asked questions about cantilever umbrellas

What are the pros and cons of a cantilever umbrella?

The upside is no pole in the middle, so you shade a whole table and still walk through. But the canopy hangs off one side, so it needs a heavy base or a fixed mount to stay put. We also compared cantilevers, shade sails and pergolas for pool shade.

What is the difference between a cantilever and a patio umbrella?

A standard patio or market umbrella has its pole in the center. A cantilever hangs the canopy from a side arm. Which means it can shade seating a center pole can't, like a sofa or daybed.

Which umbrella is the strongest against wind?

The strongest ones pair an aluminum frame with a vented canopy and a solid anchor. Shadowspec, for example, rates its umbrellas for Beaufort 5, which is 19 to 24 mph, but only when they're properly anchored. So check the wind rating and the mount together.

How much does a cantilever umbrella cost?

It's a pretty wide range. Big box cantilevers start under $100, while higher end models run from around $2,000 to past $15,000. So compare frame, fabric and warranty, not just price.

Do cantilever umbrellas come with a base?

Some do, so check each listing. The FiberBuilt 10 ft square comes with a steel cross base that takes four 80 lb granite tiles, sold separately. The Ledge Lounger Ultra's base is sold separately, and cantilever bases and in ground mounts have their own page.
