Wall Mounted Umbrella Installation: What Your Wall Needs
Yes, you can mount an umbrella to your house, as long as the wall, pillar or post is strong enough to hold it. Wall mounted umbrella installation comes down to fixing the brackets into solid structure, such as the studs behind a wood framed wall or a concrete wall, with fasteners matched to that structure.
If you are still choosing an umbrella, you can compare the ones that hang from a wall in our wall mounted umbrellas collection.
Can you mount an umbrella to your house?
Yes. A wall mount lets you hang shade from a wall or structure you already have, and Shadowspec points out that it does this without piercing waterproof membranes on rooftops and balconies. A wall bracket also suits compact areas where the floor needs to stay clear for foot traffic or furniture.
What decides it is the wall itself. In its installation guide for the Retreat, Shadowspec tells you to "choose a wall, pillar or post that is strong enough to mount the Retreat."
The umbrella has to be built for it too. Shadowspec offers a wall mount for the Retreat, the Serenity and some Unity models, and the wall bracket is a mounting option you choose.
What kind of wall can hold a wall mounted umbrella?
Shadowspec's own article on how to install a wall mounted umbrella sorts walls by what they are made of:
| Wall or structure | What Shadowspec says |
|---|---|
| Wood framed wall | "The bracket must be fixed into the studs behind the wall surface, not into the cladding itself." |
| Concrete wall | "Concrete walls offer the most secure fixing points." |
| Post or pillar | Suitable, as long as it is solid and anchored at the base. |
If your wall is brick, Shadowspec's Retreat guide does not give a fixing for it. The guide lists fixings for posts, wood and concrete only, so get a builder's view before you drill.
Whatever the wall, Shadowspec says the surface must be strong enough to support the weight and leverage of the extended arm and canopy.
How to hang an umbrella on the wall
Each brand has its own steps, so follow the guide for your model. Shadowspec's Retreat guide shows how the job goes:
- Read the manual first. Shadowspec asks you to read it in full before you assemble the umbrella.
- Gather the tools. Shadowspec lists a set square, tape measure, spirit level, electric drill, screwdriver, ratchet and eye protection.
- Pick fasteners for your structure. The guide says to "choose a 316 Stainless Steel Fastener that matches your structure." The sizes it lists are in the table below.
- Fit the Top Wall Bracket, then the Bottom Catch Bracket below it. The guide gives a recommended height and spacing, so measure from it instead of guessing.
- Mount the arm, then fit the canopy frame and the fabric canopy.
- Watch the gas spring. Once its pressure is engaged, the guide says to "take extreme care and affix the frame straight away," and it warns that the arm may swing up.
| Retreat bracket | Post or wood | Concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Top Wall Bracket | Three #14/18 x 75mm hex flange screws | Three 8mm expansion bolts |
| Bottom Catch Bracket | Two #12 x 50mm flange screws | Two 6mm expansion bolts |
These are the Retreat's figures. Another model can call for different fasteners, so check its own guide.
What if no wall on your house can take it?
You still have two ways to get shade where you want it.
The first is a post or pillar. Shadowspec lists both as suitable when they are solid and anchored at the base.
The second is to mount the umbrella to the ground instead. Our guide to anchoring a cantilever umbrella covers the ground options, from a surface plate to an in ground anchor or a weighted base. The Shadowspec Serenity is one model that gives you the choice, with its listing offering a wall mount bracket, surface plate, in ground anchor or free standing base.
Choose a wall mount bracket, surface plate, in ground anchor or free standing base.
Is a wall mounted umbrella too light to stay put?
A wall mounted umbrella is held up by its brackets, not by a base. On the Retreat, those brackets are screwed or bolted into studs, concrete or a solid post, with the fasteners in the table above.
Shadowspec says the surface must be strong enough to support the weight and leverage of the extended arm and canopy. If you are not sure your wall can take that, the brand's advice is to ask a builder or structural engineer before you drill.
Hangs from the wall, rotates 45 degrees at the wall mount and tilts forward for low sun. Warranty: 3 years residential, 1 year commercial.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I attach a cantilever umbrella to my deck?
Use a surface plate. Our guide to anchoring a cantilever umbrella covers decks and the other ground options.
Can a cantilever umbrella be wall mounted?
Some can. Shadowspec offers a wall mount for the Retreat, the Serenity and some Unity models, while the Unity Duo Octagon and Unity Quattro cannot be wall mounted. You can compare the options in our wall mounted umbrellas collection.
Do I need a professional to install a wall mounted umbrella?
Shadowspec's advice is to bring in a builder or structural engineer if you have any doubt that the structure is strong enough. If you hire an installer, Shadowspec says it will work directly with them to give support at the time of install.
Can a wall mounted umbrella stay open in the wind?
Up to a point. Shadowspec rates its umbrellas to Beaufort 5, which is 19 to 24 mph. It also says that when the wind is too much for you to sit out in, it is time to take the umbrella down and wrap it in its protection cover. Our guide to cantilever umbrellas and wind goes further into wind ratings.
